Playground Ideas

Let us play

Marcus Veerman knows that play can provide kids with some wonderful benefits for life – a 44% increase in high school graduation and 42% higher salaries, for example.  That’s why he’s dedicated the last 7 years to building playgrounds that are helping change the lives of over 350,000 children, in more than 72 countries.

His organisation,, started with the building of 40 playgrounds in Thailand, and has quickly grown via the internet. Marcus and his team have created the designs and manuals needed for anyone, anywhere, to create a playground in their local community, using only local tools and materials.

In May this year, Playground Ideas will be launching a new website that will allow crowdfunding for projects and adding more classroom resources for teachers. Marcus is a whirlwind of ideas and we can’t wait to see what he will design next.

Kooks is a proud sponsor of Playground Ideas’ work across the globe. If you’d like to find out more and support their good work please go to or visit

Can the City Slickers steal the Top End’s glory?

Every July the madcap mariners of Darwin race vessels made of empty beer cans across the waters of Mindil Beach to raise money for the Lions Clubs of Darwin, in the annual Darwin Beer Can Regatta. More than 15,000 people attend, creating a spectacle featured on television news bulletins around the world.

However, in 40 years of racing, no crew from outside the Northern Territory has ever challenged the locals for the prize. Until now.

With the generous backing of JetStar’s wine partner, Kooks, a team of Sydney city-slickers named ‘Fat Paddlers’ are currently building a high-tech boat made from thousands of reclaimed Kooks’ PET wine bottles.

Mid-2015, the crew will trek the 4,000km overland from Sydney to Darwin, in their audacious attempt to beat the locals on Sunday 12 July. A documentary is being made of their journey which will screen on the National Geographic Channel the following year. How good is that? You can follow their adventure check out
